English II - 10th Grade English
This
course combines world literature, vocabulary, grammar, and
composition. We will
spend the year reading novels, short stories, plays, poems, and
essays while improving your comprehension, communication, and
analytical skills.
In essence, we will read works of literature by authors, discuss the
work, and then write on a related topic.
There will be a special emphasis on writing as we prepare for
the NC writing test.
Highlights
-
Reading
Selections will include works by authors that are from around the world, so students are going to learn a lot about other cultures. We'll read great Greek classics like Oedipus in addition to more modern works like My Forbidden Face. -
Writing
The NC writing test focuses on definition and cause/effect essays, so we'll write several of those essays. This writing test will be in the spring, and more information can be found on the NC Department of Instruction's website. Students will also be taught MLA documentation skills. -
Speaking
There will be many opportunities for students to practice their public speaking skills in front of large and small groups. Since public speaking is such an important part of building confidence during presentations, it is good to practice as often as possible. -
Technology
We all realize that businesses rely on computers and various technology to function. Educators must prepare students for the future by teaching them the 21st century skills that they need to function in this technical society. My classes will use technology frequently, and I will model appropriate use of equipment and software in my classroom.
